What information do I need to collect from a new client before their first Styku scan?
What information do I need to collect from a new client before their first Styku scan?
Quick Answer
To create a client profile at the scanner via the email login path, you need seven required fields and two optional ones. Weight is captured automatically by the turntable's built-in scale during the scan.
Required at profile creation (email-login path)
Field | Why it's required
**Email address** | Identifies the profile; used for scan report delivery and future returning-client login
**First name** | Profile identification
**Last name** | Profile identification
**Date of birth (birthday)** | Used in body composition and health-risk calculations; also used for identity verification on returning visits (see [identity verification article](https://www.styku.com/help/search/client-identity-verification-studio-v5))
**Sex (biological)** | Used in body composition reference ranges and health-risk assessments
**Unit system** | Imperial or metric — sets how all results are displayed
**Height** | Entered manually before the scan; directly affects every body measurement output
Verify each field before starting the scan. Incorrect height or date of birth will produce inaccurate measurements for the entire scan session, and the results from that session cannot be retroactively corrected by editing the profile after the fact.
Optional fields (informational only)
Field | Effect on scan results
**Birth country** | None — informational
**Ethnicity** | None — informational
These two fields are demographic/organizational only. They do not feed into any of Styku's calculations. Fill them in if useful for your records or research; leave them blank if not.
Captured automatically at scan time
Weight — The Styku turntable has a built-in weight scale. When the client steps onto the turntable, weight is recorded as a separate step in the scan workflow before the rotation begins. No external scale or manual entry is needed under normal operation.
If for some reason the turntable does not detect weight (rare — usually a calibration or hardware issue), Studio falls back to a manual entry prompt. See the turntable weight troubleshooting articles for diagnosing repeat manual-entry situations.
Client preparation (in addition to data collection)
Before the client steps onto the turntable:
- Form-fitting clothing. Loose or baggy clothing creates visual noise for the sensor and degrades circumference and body-composition accuracy. Recommended attire: sports bra + leggings or compression shorts; men: bike shorts or boxer-briefs, no shirt.
- Hair secured off the neck and back. Hair resting on the neck obscures the neck region and skews neck/waist circumference, which feeds into body composition.
- A-pose at the right position. Arms roughly 8 inches from the torso, standing on the marked footprints, eyes forward, body still until the scan completes (~35 seconds rotation).
Two ways to create the profile
- At the scanner (email login path): Walk through the seven required fields above at check-in. The client doesn't need a phone or the mobile app for this path.
- In advance (Styku mobile app): The client downloads the Styku mobile app, creates an account themselves, and arrives ready to log in via the QR code on the Studio home screen. The mobile-app sign-up flow collects a different (smaller) set of fields and skips the in-Studio fields list — the QR login path doesn't require staff to fill in profile fields.
For a full description of the two paths and which to recommend, see Client Profiles and Login Options for Scanning in Styku Studio V5.
What is not required
- ❌ Consent forms or medical history are not stored in Studio profiles. If you collect them as part of your business workflow, store them in your own systems — Styku does not have a built-in intake form for this.
- ❌ No phone or email verification code at the scanner (Studio V5 uses birth date verification for returning clients; see identity verification article).
- ❌ No PIN for the client (the PIN in Studio is for staff/admin access only).
Editing a profile after creation
Staff can edit profile fields (including height and date of birth) after the profile is created. From the Studio home screen: Settings → Customer Profiles and Scan Data → log in as admin → Edit Profile → choose the profile and load it. Note that editing height or date of birth does not retroactively recalculate measurements from past scan sessions — corrections only apply to new scans going forward.
If this resolves your issue, no further action is needed.
If the problem persists, contact support through the Styku Business Portal at styku.com/portal and include: a description of which field is causing trouble (e.g., the system rejects an email, a required field is not visible, the height unit is incorrect), and the Styku Studio version installed on your scanner.
Applies to: Styku Studio V5, all current Styku scanner configurations
