Why won't my V5 turntable rotate, and why does the scanner detect objects that aren't there?

Why won't my V5 turntable rotate, and why does the scanner detect objects that aren't there?

If your turntable has stopped rotating and your scanner seems to detect objects that aren't there, these two problems often share the same root causes: a loose cable connection, a power issue, or the scanner being placed too close to walls or other surfaces. Work through the checks below in order before contacting support.

Step 1: Check the Turntable's Power and USB Connections

  1. Locate the AC/DC power adapter cable running from the turntable to the wall outlet.
  2. Unplug it from the wall, wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in firmly.
  3. Check the USB cable running from the turntable to the laptop. Unplug it from both ends and reconnect it securely.
  4. Try a different USB port on the laptop if one is available.
  5. Restart the Styku Studio software and attempt a scan again.

Step 2: Verify the Turntable Can Rotate via the Tools Menu

Before assuming a hardware fault, confirm whether the turntable motor itself is responsive by manually triggering rotation from within the software:

  1. Log in as an administrator in Styku Studio.
  2. Press the Tools button in the software.
  3. Press the Start/Stop button next to the Start/Stop Turntable option. The turntable should begin rotating.
  4. Press the Start/Stop button again to stop the turntable.

If the turntable responds here but not during a scan, the issue may be scan-configuration related rather than a hardware or connection fault. If it does not respond at all, continue to the steps below.

Step 3: Check the Camera Tower USB Connection

  1. Locate the USB cable running from the back of the camera tower to the laptop.
  2. Unplug it from both ends, wait 10 seconds, and reconnect it firmly.
  3. Restart Styku Studio and check whether the live camera preview looks clear and empty when no one is standing on the turntable.

Step 4: Check Your Scanner's Placement and Environment

The depth sensor can pick up walls, furniture, and other nearby surfaces as if they were part of a person's body. This causes phantom shapes, circles, or distortions during a scan.

Check that your setup meets these requirements:

  • The turntable has at least 17 inches of clear space on all sides — no walls, equipment, or furniture within that radius.
  • The room has no direct sunlight or strong ambient daylight entering from windows or skylights. Infrared sensors are sensitive to natural light.
  • There are no mirrors, glass panels, or highly reflective surfaces in the scanning area.

Move the scanner to a more open location if needed and retest.

Step 5: Clear the Sensor Background in Styku Studio

If the camera preview still shows phantom objects after repositioning the scanner, the software may need to re-learn what an empty room looks like.

  1. Make sure the turntable is completely empty — no objects, bags, or clothing on or near the platform.
  2. Open Styku Studio on the laptop.
  3. Navigate to the Settings or Scanner section and look for a Background Calibration or Clear Background option.
  4. Run the calibration with the platform empty and the scanning area clear.
  5. Once complete, initiate a test scan to confirm the issue is resolved.

Step 6: Restart Everything in the Correct Order

If the above steps haven't resolved the issue, restart the full system in this sequence:

  1. Close Styku Studio.
  2. Remove the power and USB cables from the turntable.
  3. Unplug the camera tower USB.
  4. Shut down the laptop fully (not sleep — a full shutdown).
  5. Wait 30 seconds.
  6. Plug the power cable back into the turntable, then plug the USB cable back into the turntable.
  7. Plug in the camera tower USB cable.
  8. Power on the laptop and open Styku Studio.
  9. Test again.

If this resolves your issue, no further action is needed.

If the problem persists, contact Styku support via the business portal at https://www.styku.com/portal and include: your scanner model, a description of what the camera preview shows when the platform is empty (including any photos or screen recordings), confirmation of how far the scanner is from the nearest wall, whether the turntable power light is on, and the results of each step above.

Applies to: Styku X2 Pro and Styku S100 (V5 Turntable); Styku Studio V5; all configurations using the V5 turntable
