Why is the lower half of legs cut off in 3D scans after a software update?
If your Styku scans are showing incomplete lower legs after a recent software update, this is a technical issue — not a change to how Styku works. The mesh reconstruction is failing to capture the lower leg region, and the most common causes are scanner or turntable positioning, reflective surfaces nearby, or clothing on the subject's feet and lower legs.
What Causes This Issue
After a software update, the scanning software may apply stricter parameters for mesh reconstruction. This makes it more sensitive to:
- The scanner or turntable being slightly out of position
- Reflective surfaces in the scan area (mirrors, shiny floors, glass)
- Socks, shoes, or reflective clothing on the subject's feet and lower legs
- A cluttered or non-neutral background behind the subject
Steps to Fix It
Follow these steps in order before running another scan:
Check scanner and turntable placement. Make sure both the camera tower and turntable are on a flat, stable surface. The turntable should be centered directly in front of the camera tower, with at least 17 inches of clearance on all sides.
Check the background. The wall behind the subject should be plain and matte — ideally a neutral grey or white. Avoid patterned walls, curtains, or any surface that reflects light.
Remove reflective objects from the scan area. Check for mirrors, glass panels, glossy floors, or any shiny equipment near the scanning zone. Move or cover them if possible.
Prepare the subject correctly. The subject should not wear socks, shoes, or any reflective clothing. Bare feet directly on the turntable gives the best result.
Restart the Styku Studio application. Close the app fully, then reopen it before running another scan.
Run a test scan. Ask a staff member or yourself to do a quick test scan to confirm the lower legs are now captured fully before scanning clients.
If the Problem Continues
If you have followed all the steps above and the lower legs are still being cut off consistently across all scans, the issue may require further investigation by the Styku support team. Do not continue using the scanner for client measurements until the issue is resolved, as the biometric data will be incomplete and inaccurate.
If this resolves your issue, no further action is needed.
If the problem persists, contact support and include: your scanner model, the version of Styku Studio currently installed, a description of your scan room setup (background color, flooring type, any nearby reflective surfaces), and at least two example scans showing the leg cutoff issue.
