Why is my turntable making noise and not rotating properly?
Why is my turntable making noise and not rotating properly?
If your turntable makes grinding or struggling noises when someone stands on it, or fails to rotate during a scan, the internal motor or mechanics are likely damaged. This type of damage is most common after the turntable has been transported or stored in conditions that put stress on the unit — such as extreme temperatures or impacts during transit. In most cases, the turntable will need to be replaced.
Signs Your Turntable Has a Hardware Problem
These symptoms point to a mechanical or motor failure rather than a software or connection issue:
- An unusual grinding, straining, or clicking noise when weight is applied to the platform
- The platform rotates slowly, unevenly, or not at all during a scan
- The issue started after the unit was moved, shipped, or stored for an extended period
If you are only seeing a weight not detected error but the platform still rotates normally, that is a separate issue — contact support for turntable weight detection troubleshooting steps.
Steps to Confirm the Problem
Before concluding you have a hardware failure, you can use the Tools menu to test turntable rotation without initiating a full scan:
- Log in as an administrator and press the Tools button in the software.
- Press the Start/Stop button next to the Start/Stop Turntable option to start the turntable rotating.
- Observe whether the platform rotates smoothly and listen for any unusual noises.
- Press the Start/Stop button again to stop the turntable.
If the platform does not rotate, rotates incorrectly, or makes straining noises during these steps, proceed to confirm with a live scan:
- Make sure the turntable's USB cable is securely connected to the laptop and the power adapter is plugged into a wall outlet.
- Open Styku Studio and start a new scan.
- Step onto the turntable platform and observe what happens:
- Does the platform attempt to rotate?
- Do you hear any unusual noise?
- Step off the platform and watch if it completes a rotation on its own.
If the platform does not rotate, rotates incorrectly, or makes straining noises during these steps, the turntable likely has a hardware failure. Before concluding a full replacement is needed, however, try the reset and recalibration steps below.
Try a Turntable Reset First
In some cases, connectivity or power issues can mimic mechanical problems. Perform the following reset steps before assuming a hardware failure:
- Close the Styku Studio application.
- Remove the power and USB cables from the turntable.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Plug the power cable back into the turntable, then plug the USB cable back in.
- Re-launch the Styku Studio software.
- Repeat the rotation test from the Tools menu (described above).
If the turntable still fails to rotate properly or continues making unusual noises after the reset, the issue is hardware-related and the unit will likely need to be replaced.
What to Do Next
Styku turntables are not field-repairable. If you have confirmed a hardware failure:
- If your scanner is under warranty: Contact Styku Support right away. A warranty replacement may be available at no cost.
- If your scanner is out of warranty: A replacement turntable is available for purchase. Contact Styku Support to place an order.
You can reach Styku Support via the business portal at https://www.styku.com/portal. Include your scanner model, a description of the noise and rotation behavior you are experiencing, and whether the unit has been moved or stored recently.
Replacement turntables are sold separately. Pricing and shipping costs will be provided by the support team.
Storage and Transport Tips
To avoid this type of damage in the future:
- Always store and transport the turntable in its original packaging when possible
- Avoid leaving the unit in a vehicle trunk or other environments with extreme heat, cold, or humidity for extended periods
- Do not place heavy items on top of the turntable platform during storage
If this resolves your issue, no further action is needed.
If the problem persists, contact support and include: your scanner model, a description of the noise and rotation behavior you are experiencing, and whether the unit has been moved or stored recently.
Applies to: All current and previous Styku scanner models with a turntable (X2L, X2, X2 Pro, S100)
