Why is my camera tower USB cable damaged, and how do I replace it?

Why is my camera tower USB cable damaged, and how do I replace it?

The USB cable that connects your camera tower to the laptop can wear out or become damaged over time, causing connectivity problems or slow sensor speeds. In most cases, you can fix this quickly by replacing the cable yourself — no technician needed.

How to Tell If the Cable Is the Problem

You may have a damaged or degraded tower USB cable if you notice any of these symptoms:

  • The camera tower is not detected by the Styku Studio software
  • Scans fail to start or drop out mid-capture
  • You see warnings about slow USB connection speeds
  • The cable shows visible wear, kinking, or damage near the connectors

What Cable You Need

The camera tower uses a specific cable type. Make sure you purchase the correct one:

  • Cable type: USB 3.0 Type-C locking cable
  • The locking connector is important — it secures the cable firmly to the tower so it does not come loose during use
  • This cable is available from online retailers such as Amazon; search for "USB-C dual screw locking to USB 3.0 cable"

A Note on USB Extension Cables

If you need to increase the distance between the sensor tower and your computer, note that off-the-shelf USB extension cables do not give stable results and will cause performance issues. Styku has tested and recommends only the Newnex FireNex active extension cable, which delivers stable, high-performance results with the Styku scanner. This active extension cable can increase the distance between the sensor tower and the computer from 2.1 meters to 7.1 meters (about 23 feet). You can purchase it directly from NTC Distributing. Styku does not recommend using any other extension cable.

How to Replace the Cable

  1. Power down the scanner and disconnect all cables from the laptop.
  2. Locate the top panel of the camera tower — it lifts off like a lid.
  3. Use a small Allen wrench (hex key) to loosen the fasteners securing the top panel, then remove it.
  4. Disconnect the old USB cable from inside the tower.
  5. Insert the new cable and secure the locking connector so it is firmly in place.
  6. Replace the top panel of the tower and re-fasten it.
  7. Reconnect the cable to your laptop and relaunch Styku Studio to confirm the camera tower is detected.

Prefer to Have Styku Send a Replacement?

If you would rather not source the cable yourself, you can request a replacement through an RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization). Keep in mind that sourcing the cable locally or online is typically the faster option.

To request an RMA, contact Styku support using the steps in the section below.

If this resolves your issue, no further action is needed.

If the problem persists, contact support and include: your scanner model, a description of when the connectivity issue occurs (e.g., at startup, mid-scan), any error messages shown in Styku Studio, and confirmation of whether the cable has been replaced and with what cable type.

Applies to: Styku X2L (camera tower with D455 sensor)
