Why does the Styku scanner read one person's body but skip the next?

Why does the Styku scanner read one person's body but skip the next?

If the Styku scanner captures one person's body correctly but then fails to scan the next person, this is usually caused by something interfering with the camera's ability to detect the subject — not a problem with the person themselves. The most common causes are incorrect positioning, loose clothing, ambient light, or a turntable connection issue that developed between scans.

1. Check the Subject's Position on the Turntable

The camera needs a clear, centered view of the person being scanned.

  • The subject must stand in the center of the turntable platform.
  • Arms should be slightly away from the body, not pressed against the sides.
  • Feet should be flat, shoulder-width apart.
  • The subject should remain still until the scan begins.

Styku Studio will show a pose indicator on screen. The scan will not start until the software detects the correct stance.

2. Check Clothing and Accessories

Loose or bulky clothing can confuse the depth sensor, causing it to misread or skip the body shape entirely.

  • Subjects should wear form-fitting clothing (athletic wear, compression shorts, sports bra, etc.).
  • Remove bulky items: hoodies, jackets, wide belts, large jewelry.
  • Long, flowing hair should be tied up if possible.
  • Remove shoes if practical — thick soles can affect height and weight readings.

3. Check the Lighting in the Room

The Styku camera uses an infrared depth sensor. Daylight and bright ambient light can interfere with it.

  • Block any windows or sources of natural light in the scan area.
  • Turn off overhead lights that shine directly at the camera tower or the subject.
  • Consistent, indirect indoor lighting works best.
  • Avoid scanning near glass doors or skylights.

4. Check the Turntable Connection

A loose or disrupted USB connection between the turntable and laptop can cause the scanner to fail mid-session without an obvious error.

  1. After each failed scan attempt, check that the USB cable from the turntable to the laptop is firmly plugged in at both ends.
  2. If the connection looks secure but the problem continues, disconnect the USB cable, wait 10 seconds, and reconnect it.
  3. If reconnecting does not help, restart the Styku Studio software and try again.
  4. If the turntable still fails to initialize, restart the laptop fully, then relaunch Styku Studio.

5. Make Sure the Scan Zone is Clear

Objects within the camera's field of view — furniture, walls, equipment — can interfere with the scan.

  • Keep at least 17 inches of clear space on all sides of the turntable.
  • No one else should be standing near the subject during the scan.
  • The camera tower should face the subject directly with no obstructions between them.

6. Confirm the Turntable Rotates Smoothly

If the turntable stops or hesitates mid-rotation, the camera may not capture a complete image.

  • Stand next to the turntable and manually check that it rotates freely before starting a scan.
  • Make sure the power adapter is plugged in to a working wall outlet — the turntable needs power to rotate and weigh the subject.
  • Check that nothing is caught under the platform edge.

If this resolves your issue, no further action is needed.

If the problem persists, contact support and include: a description of exactly when the scan fails (before rotation starts, during rotation, or at processing), what error message or screen appears in Styku Studio, whether the turntable is rotating normally, the lighting setup in your scan room, and what clothing the subject was wearing.

Applies to: Styku Studio V5, all current Styku scanner configurations (X2L, X2, X2 Pro)
