Why does Styku Studio V5 fail to detect arm separation during body scans?

Why does Styku Studio V5 fail to detect arm separation during body scans?

After updating to Styku Studio V5, some users report that the scanner incorrectly rejects a patient's arm position, even when they are standing correctly. This appears to affect scans of larger patients where the arms are close to the body. You can work around this issue immediately by enabling the Bypass Posture Check setting in Styku Studio.

What Is Happening

The V5 software update changed how Styku Studio detects whether a patient's arms are separated from their chest before a scan begins. In some cases — particularly with larger patients — the software incorrectly reads the arm position as improper and will not allow the scan to proceed.

In Styku Studio V5, the scan flow requires the client to align until the pose frames turn green before the scan begins. If the arm-separation check fails to clear, the scan cannot start. This is a known issue introduced with the V5 update. A permanent fix has not yet been confirmed, but the workaround below allows you to resume scanning right away.

How to Work Around the Issue: Bypass the Posture Check

You can disable the arm-separation check in Styku Studio settings. This allows scans to proceed without the software validating arm position first.

  1. Open Styku Studio on your scanner laptop.
  2. Navigate to Settings.
  3. Find the Bypass Posture Check option and enable it.
  4. Return to the scanning screen and attempt the scan again.

Once this setting is enabled, the posture check will no longer block the scan from starting. You should be able to scan patients as normal.

Tips for Best Results While Using This Workaround

Since the posture check will be disabled, coach your patients to stand in the correct position manually before starting the scan:

  • Feet centered on the turntable platform, shoulder-width apart.
  • Arms slightly away from the sides of the body — not pressed against the torso. In Styku Studio V5, clients should assume the A-pose and remain still while spinning.
  • Looking straight ahead, standing tall and still.

Taking a moment to confirm correct positioning before starting each scan will help ensure accurate results.

Note: If the scan review screen shows predicted measurements, a rescan is recommended unless the scan looks acceptable. Choosing Scan Again will delete the current scan and restart the process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can we go back to the previous version of Styku Studio? Downgrading to a previous software version is not a supported option. The bypass posture check workaround is the recommended path forward while this issue is being investigated.

Does disabling the posture check affect scan accuracy? The posture check is a safety step that confirms arm position before the scan begins. As long as your patient is standing correctly when you start the scan, disabling the check does not affect the quality or accuracy of the resulting 3D scan and measurements.

Will my previous scan data be lost after updating to V5? No. Styku stores scan data and customer profile information both on your local computer and on cloud servers. If you update to the latest software version, your previous data may be re-measured to use the latest measurements, but you will not lose your scans or customer profiles.

How do I install or reinstall Styku Studio V5? You can download the latest version of Styku Studio from the Styku software download page. Note: before installing, disconnect your Styku turntable and sensor from the computer. The update process takes approximately 10–30 minutes to complete. If you already have a Styku account, use your existing email and password to log in during setup — do not create a new account.

If this resolves your issue, no further action is needed.

If the problem persists, contact support and include: your Styku Studio software version number, a description of the patient body type where the issue occurs, any error messages or on-screen prompts shown when the scan is blocked, and whether the Bypass Posture Check setting is enabled.
