Why does Styku Studio require a reboot after a software update?
Software updates to Styku Studio can occasionally cause the app to error out, requiring you to restart the software or reboot the laptop before scanning resumes. This behavior is not expected after a routine update, and our team is actively investigating the root cause. In the meantime, the steps below will help you recover quickly and avoid disruptions during business hours.
Why This Happens
Styku Studio updates are pushed automatically over the internet. In most cases, the update installs cleanly and the app continues working normally. However, in some situations the app may error out after an update is applied. Possible contributing factors include:
- A Windows system update running at the same time as the Styku Studio update
- The update being applied while a scan session is already in progress
- A conflict during the update process that requires the app to fully restart to complete
This is not the intended behavior. If you experience a consistent error after every update, please report it to our support team so we can escalate it for investigation.
What To Do When the Scanner Errors Out After an Update
- Close Styku Studio completely if it is still open.
- Important: Disconnect your Styku turntable and sensor from the computer before proceeding.
- Restart the laptop using Start > Restart (not Shut Down).
- Once the laptop has fully rebooted, open Styku Studio from the desktop.
- Log in and confirm the software loads normally before resuming sessions.
Note on your scan data: Updating to the latest software version will not delete your scans or customer profiles. Your previous data may be re-measured to use the latest measurements, but all scan history and customer profile information is retained both on your local computer and on Styku's cloud servers.
If the software still errors out after a full reboot, check whether Windows Update is running in the background. Windows updates can interfere with Styku Studio at startup.
How To Check for a Pending Windows Update
- Click the Start button and open Settings.
- Go to Windows Update.
- If an update is downloading or installing, wait for it to finish.
- Restart the laptop again once Windows updates are complete.
- Open Styku Studio and test a scan.
Reducing Disruption During Business Hours
Note that the update process on average takes about 10–30 minutes to complete, so please make sure you schedule time accordingly. To minimize disruption:
- Apply updates before opening for the day. When you see an update notification at startup, complete the update and reboot before your first client arrives.
- Disconnect hardware before updating. Always disconnect your Styku turntable and sensor from the computer before starting a software update.
- Do not apply updates mid-session. If an update prompt appears while a session is in progress, finish the current scan first, then apply the update during a break.
- Keep Windows Update on a schedule. Set Windows Update to install outside of business hours to avoid conflicts. Go to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced Options > Active Hours and set your clinic's operating hours.
Re-authenticating After an Update
If you are prompted to log in after an update, use your existing email and password to log into the software. If you don't remember your password, click the Forgot Password button to reset it. Do not choose Create Account — there is no need to create a new account if you already have one.
If this resolves your issue, no further action is needed.
If the problem persists, contact support and include: the exact error message displayed after the update, the version of Styku Studio shown in the app (found under Help > About), whether Windows Update was also running at the time, and whether a full reboot resolved the error or the error returned on the next update.
