Why does my Styku scanner show \"Sensor is Disconnected\" mid-scan?
Why does my Styku scanner show "Sensor is Disconnected" mid-scan?
A "THE SENSOR IS DISCONNECTED" error mid-scan is most often caused by a loose or incompatible USB connection between the camera tower and the computer, or by bright light shining directly onto the turntable area. Both issues are fixable without replacing hardware. Follow the steps below before contacting support.
Step 1: Check Your USB Connections
A loose or incorrectly seated USB cable is the most common cause of this error.
- Power down the scanner completely.
- Locate the USB cable running from the back of the camera tower to the computer.
- Unplug the cable from both ends and firmly reconnect it.
- If your computer has both a USB-A port and a USB-C port, try switching which port the camera tower cable uses. If the camera tower is currently plugged into USB-C, move it to USB-A, or vice versa.
- Similarly, check the USB cable connecting the turntable to the computer and reseat it.
- Power the scanner back on and attempt a test scan.
Step 2: Remove Bright Light Sources Near the Turntable
The camera tower uses an infrared (IR) depth sensor classified as a Class 1 Laser, which is considered safe under all conditions of normal use. However, strong overhead or ambient light — especially direct light shining down onto the turntable — can interfere with the sensor's ability to capture accurate depth data during a scan.
- Look for overhead lights, skylights, or windows that shine directly onto the turntable area.
- Reposition the turntable so it is not in direct light, or block the light source.
- Styku recommends scanning in a room with no direct or ambient daylight.
Step 3: Verify Your Scanner Spacing
Insufficient space around the scanner can contribute to setup problems that affect scan quality and hardware behavior. Per Styku's space requirements for the S100X, ensure the following minimum clearances are met:
- Minimum room footprint: 6 ft by 4.3 ft
- Distance between turntable and sensor tower: at least 25 inches
- Distance between turntable and any side or back walls: at least 14 inches
- Recommended clearance around the turntable: 18 inches
Verify your setup matches these dimensions before proceeding.
Step 4: Run a Test Scan
After making the adjustments above:
- Restart the computer fully.
- Open Styku Studio.
- Complete a test scan on yourself or a staff member before scanning any clients.
- Confirm the scan completes the full turntable rotation without interruption.
If the Error Keeps Coming Back
This error can be intermittent and may not appear every scan. Note any patterns, such as:
- Does it happen more often later in the day?
- Does it happen with specific clients or at a particular point in the rotation?
- Did any cables or equipment change recently?
This information will help support diagnose the issue faster.
If this resolves your issue, no further action is needed.
If the problem persists, contact support and include: a description of when the error occurs (time of day, point in the scan rotation, how often), which USB ports the camera tower and turntable are connected to, photos of your scanner setup showing the lighting conditions and cable connections, and any error messages displayed on screen.
