Why do clients show different height and neck measurements after switching to a new scanner or computer?

Why do clients show different height and neck measurements after switching to a new scanner or computer?

After switching to a new scanner or replacement computer, you may notice that follow-up scans show clients as slightly shorter or with a larger neck circumference compared to their earlier scans. This is most often caused by small differences in how the new scanner is set up compared to the old one — not a change in your clients' bodies. Consistent setup and scan conditions are the key to accurate progress tracking.

Why This Happens

Each scanner captures a 3D image based on the exact position of the camera tower, the turntable, and the subject standing on it. If anything is slightly different between sessions — even by a small amount — measurements can shift. Common causes include:

  • Camera tower placement: If the tower is positioned at a slightly different height or distance from the turntable than before, height and neck measurements can be affected.
  • Turntable position: The turntable should be the same distance from the tower as in your original setup.
  • Posture variation: Small changes in how a client stands — head tilt, shoulder position, how straight they hold their neck — can shift measurements by 0.5–2 inches.
  • Hardware differences: A new or replacement computer does not change how the scanner captures the body, but if the camera tower was also moved or re-positioned during the transition, that can introduce measurement differences.
  • Ambient light: Direct sunlight or bright ambient light can interfere with the infrared camera and affect scan quality.

Steps to Improve Consistency

Follow these steps every time you set up or move your scanner:

  1. Place the camera tower at the correct height. Follow the setup guide that came with your scanner for the exact recommended distance and angle.
  2. Position the turntable correctly. The turntable should be at least 17 inches from any wall or furniture, and the same fixed distance from the camera tower as in your original setup.
  3. Mark your floor positions. Use tape or floor markers to record where the tower and turntable sit. This makes it easy to reproduce the exact same setup every time.
  4. Control lighting. Scan in a room with no direct sunlight or bright ambient light. Close blinds or curtains if needed.
  5. Coach clients on posture. Ask clients to stand tall, look straight ahead, keep their chin level, and relax their shoulders the same way each visit.
  6. Minimize clothing and hair interference. Scan in minimal, form-fitting clothing. If a client has long hair, ask them to pull it up and away from the neck.

What to Do About Existing Discrepancies

If clients already have scans taken on the old setup and new scans taken on the new setup:

  • Do not delete old scans. They are still useful as a baseline reference. Note that scans are stored on Styku's servers, so no scan data is lost when switching computers.
  • Note the hardware change in your records. Inform clients that measurements from the new setup are the new baseline going forward.
  • Re-scan affected clients under the corrected setup conditions to establish a new, consistent baseline if needed.
  • Contact Styku Support if you believe the discrepancies are larger than expected and want a team member to review specific scans with you. You can reach Styku Support through the business portal at https://www.styku.com/portal.

Correcting a Client's Name or Email

If a client's name or email address was entered incorrectly in Styku Studio, this can prevent them from finding their profile in the Styku mobile app. Contact Styku Support and provide the incorrect name/email and the correct name/email — the support team can merge profiles and move scans to the correct account on your behalf.

If this resolves your issue, no further action is needed.

If the problem persists, contact support and include: your scanner model, the software version shown in Styku Studio, a description of how your scanner is positioned (distance from tower to turntable, room lighting conditions), and 2–3 example scan reports showing the measurement discrepancy (include client name, scan dates, and the measurements in question).

Applies to: Styku Studio V5, all current Styku scanner configurations with Intel D455 camera (Styku X2L, Styku X2, Styku X2 Pro)
