What is Total Caloric Expenditure and how is it calculated in Styku?
Overview
Total Caloric Expenditure (TCE) is the estimated total number of calories a client burns in a single day. It appears in the client summary report alongside BMR and is directly influenced by the activity level set in the Fat Loss goal.
Details
Total Caloric Expenditure is made up of three components:
Component | Description | Approximate % of TCE
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) | Energy burned at rest | 60–75%
Thermic Effect of Food (TEF) | Energy used to digest food | ~10%
Physical Activity | Energy used during movement and exercise | 15–30%
How activity level affects TCE: The physical activity component varies widely between individuals. When you set an activity level in the Fat Loss goal under the Fitness tab, this directly changes the Total Caloric Expenditure value shown in the report.
Notes
- Physical activity is the most variable component and the one practitioners and clients have the most direct control over.
- A more active client will have a higher TCE, which affects both the caloric deficit calculation and the recommended daily calorie intake.
If this resolves your issue, no further action is needed.
If the problem persists, contact support and include: client scan date, activity level selected, and a screenshot of the Fitness tab goal settings.
Applies to: All Styku configurations with the Fitness/Fat Loss goal feature enabled.
