What is Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) in the Styku Scan Report and How Is It Calculated?

Overview

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories the body burns at rest to sustain essential, life-sustaining functions. It appears in two locations within the Styku report:

  • The Wellness Information section on page one of the scan report.
  • The top of the Caloric Expenditure / Fitness section of the client summary report, next to Total Caloric Expenditure.

BMR is a foundational number for nutrition and fitness planning and serves as the single largest component of a client's total daily energy expenditure.

What BMR Measures

BMR represents the energy (in calories) the body requires at complete rest to maintain basic functions, including:

  • Breathing
  • Blood circulation
  • Cell growth and repair

BMR typically accounts for approximately 60–75% of total daily calorie burn for most people. It does not include calories burned through physical activity or digestion — see the related article on Total Caloric Expenditure for the full picture.

How Styku Calculates BMR

Styku uses the validated Harris-Benedict equation to estimate BMR from the client's body data collected during a scan.

Reference ranges:

Population | Approximate BMR

Average adult male | ~2,000 calories/day

Average adult female | ~1,500 calories/day

Factors That Influence BMR

  • Age – BMR tends to decrease with age, which can contribute to weight gain over time.
  • Sex – Men typically have a higher BMR than women due to greater average muscle mass.
  • Weight and height – Larger body size generally corresponds to a higher BMR.
  • Muscle mass – Greater muscle mass increases BMR.

Notes

  • BMR is an estimate, not a direct measurement. Individual variation is normal.
  • BMR does not account for physical activity. To estimate total daily calorie needs, an activity multiplier must be applied to the BMR value.
  • Use BMR as a starting point for client conversations about caloric intake, not as a precise prescription.

If this resolves your issue, no further action is needed.

If the problem persists, contact support and include: the client's scan ID, scan date, software version, and a screenshot of the BMR value displayed in the report.

Applies to: All Styku configurations; the Caloric Expenditure section display requires the Fitness/Fat Loss goal feature to be enabled.
