What is a weight scale and how should it be used correctly?
Overview
A weight scale measures a person's total body mass. Although "weight" and "mass" are often used interchangeably in everyday settings, they are technically different:
- Mass is the amount of matter in a body (constant regardless of location).
- Weight is the force of gravity acting on that mass (varies by gravitational environment).
For practical purposes in fitness and clinical settings, scale readings are treated as body mass measurements.
Steps / Details
To get an accurate reading:
- Calibrate the scale – Ensure the scale is calibrated and set to zero before use.
- Use a hard, flat surface – Place the scale on a firm surface such as tile or hardwood flooring. Soft surfaces like carpet will produce inaccurate readings.
- Have the subject stand still – The subject should stand centered and still on the scale while the reading is taken.
Notes
- Always zero or tare the scale before each measurement session.
- Consistency in conditions (time of day, clothing, footwear) can improve the reliability of weight tracking over time.
If this resolves your issue, no further action is needed.
If the problem persists, contact support and include: the scale model, surface type used, and the discrepancy between expected and recorded weight.
Applies to: All Styku configurations that incorporate weight measurement
