What is a stadiometer and how is it used to measure height?
Overview
A stadiometer is a device used to measure a person's height. It consists of a vertical ruler or measuring tape fixed to a wall or stand, with a sliding horizontal paddle (headboard) that rests on top of the subject's head to record the measurement.
Steps / Details
- Ask the subject to stand upright against the stadiometer with their back straight.
- Lower the sliding horizontal paddle until it rests flat on the top of their head.
- Read the measurement at eye level from the scale on the device.
Notes
- Stadiometers are straightforward to use but are bulky and not easily portable.
- Newer, more portable height-measurement technologies are emerging and may replace traditional stadiometers in some settings.
If this resolves your issue, no further action is needed.
