What body composition model levels does a 3D body scan measure?
Overview
Body composition can be analyzed across five levels of increasing complexity. When selecting a measurement device, it is useful to consider which levels of the model it can address. Styku's 3D optical imaging covers two of the most clinically relevant levels.
The Relevant Levels
Level | Name | Examples of Measurements
**Level 4** | Tissue level | Skeletal muscle mass, fat mass
**Level 5** | Whole body level | Limb lengths, circumferences
What 3D Optical Imaging Provides
Styku's 3D scanner captures both Level 4 and Level 5 data in a single scan of under one minute, including:
- Circumferences (e.g., waist, hip, chest)
- Limb lengths
- Body composition estimates (e.g., body fat mass, lean mass)
This combination of measurements would typically take approximately one hour to collect using traditional manual methods.
Notes
- Body composition values produced by 3D scanning — as with most body composition tools — are estimates derived from equations, not direct measurements.
- Capturing both tissue-level and whole-body-level data in one scan makes 3D imaging efficient for settings where time and breadth of data both matter.
