What are the body composition categories in the Styku scan report?
Overview
Based on a client's body fat percentage, Styku assigns them to one of five body composition categories. The category thresholds vary depending on whether your system uses the Basic (BIA) or Phoenix (DEXA-validated) model. Understanding what each category means helps practitioners have informed conversations with clients.
Details
Body Composition Categories
Category | Description
**Essential Fat** | The minimum level of body fat required for basic physical and physiological health.
**Athlete** | Common among competitive athletes due to high levels of physical activity and training. Note: this is a generalization — not all individuals in this range are competitive athletes.
**Fit** | Associated with good health and a lower risk of chronic diseases.
**Average** | Considered healthy, but not necessarily optimal.
**At-Risk** | Indicates overweight or obese classification; associated with increased risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and respiratory disease.
How Categories Are Assigned
- The client's calculated body fat percentage is compared against the thresholds for the active model (Basic or Phoenix).
- Because BIA underestimates body fat, the Basic model uses lower thresholds for each category.
- Because DEXA is more accurate and tends to produce higher body fat values, the Phoenix model uses higher thresholds.
Notes
- A client who falls into the At-Risk category should not be alarmed solely by this label. Obesity is a complex medical condition influenced by genetic, environmental, and behavioral factors.
- Lifestyle changes — including a healthy diet and regular physical activity — are effective ways to manage obesity-related health risks.
- Category threshold tables comparing Basic and Phoenix values are available within the Styku scan report interface.
