Is the sensor harmful or invasive? Can people with pacemakers be scanned? Can I scan pregnant people?
The Styku scanner uses an infrared depth sensor — it emits no radiation, no electrical current, and no harmful light. It is completely non-invasive and safe for virtually all clients.
Is the infrared sensor safe?
Yes. The sensor emits infrared light to measure the distance between the camera and the surface of the body. This is the same technology used in TV remote controls, cordless mice, and baby monitors. The sensor is classified as a Class 1 Laser, which is defined as safe under all conditions of normal use and is the safest laser classification.
The infrared light does not penetrate the body, affect human tissue, or interact with any internal medical devices.
Can people with pacemakers or implanted devices be scanned?
Yes. The infrared sensor does not emit any electromagnetic signal that interacts with pacemakers, insulin pumps, cochlear implants, or other implanted medical devices. It is safe for these clients to be scanned.
Can pregnant clients be scanned?
Yes — the scan is physically safe for pregnant clients. Infrared light does not affect the body or fetus in any way.
Note that body composition values (body fat %, lean mass) will not be accurate during pregnancy — the body's shape and fluid distribution change significantly, and these changes are not representative of normal body composition. However, scanning during pregnancy is still valuable: clients can track how their body shape changes over the course of the pregnancy using the 3D model and circumference measurements.
What about clients who can't stand in the standard A-pose?
The Styku software detects the correct standing position before starting a scan. For clients who cannot hold the A-pose due to injury, mobility limitations, or other reasons, this detection can be bypassed in the software settings.
For instructions, see: Can I turn off the "Wings" to scan someone who can't stand in the proper pose?
If this resolves your issue, no further action is needed.
If the problem persists, contact support through the Styku Business Portal at styku.com/portal and include: a description of the client's situation and which aspect of the scan is not behaving as expected.
Applies to: All Styku configurations
