How do I switch between the Basic and Advanced body composition models, and verify all my locations are consistent?
Styku Studio V5 removed the per-profile toggle between the Basic and Advanced body composition models. The model is now an account-wide setting that applies to all scans on that unit. Starting with Styku Studio version 5.56, the Advanced model is the default on fresh installs and updates.
This article covers how to switch models on a single location, how to verify consistency across multiple locations, and the key differences between Basic and Advanced.
What Changed in V5
- Per-profile and per-scan model switching is no longer available. The body composition model is set once per scanner and applies to every scan on that unit.
- Advanced is the default model on Styku Studio V5.56 and later.
- The Styku Mobile App uses the Advanced model exclusively. Basic is not available on mobile regardless of the Studio setting. If Studio is set to Basic, clients viewing results in the mobile app will see different body fat values than what appears in Studio.
How to Switch Models (Single Location)
Switching requires an administrator login on the scanner laptop.
- Open Styku Studio on the scanner laptop.
- Navigate to Settings.
- Locate Body Composition Model.
- Select Basic or Advanced.
- Save the change.
The next scan on that unit will use the selected model. Existing scans are not recalculated.
Multi-Location Consistency
If you operate Styku scanners at multiple locations, every unit should use the same model. When locations use different models, the same client can receive different body fat readings at different sites, leading to confusion and support requests.
How to Verify Each Location
- At each location, open Styku Studio on the scanner laptop.
- Navigate to Settings.
- Confirm the Body Composition Model is set to your preferred model (typically Advanced).
- Repeat at every location.
Request a Styku Support Audit
If you have many locations and cannot easily check each one, Styku Support can audit all scanners on your account, identify which units are still set to Basic, and help coordinate the switch. Contact support and include your business account name.
When to Re-Verify
Check the model setting at each location after any of the following:
- A Styku Studio software update
- A new location setup or scanner deployment
- A laptop replacement or reinstall
Styku Studio 5.56 and later defaults to Advanced on install, but it is good practice to confirm the setting after any change.
Quick Model Comparison
| Basic | Advanced
**Type** | 2-compartment (fat + fat-free mass) | 3-compartment (fat + lean + bone)
**Calibration** | Seca BIA | DEXA-Hologic
**Validation** | Limited population coverage | Correlation of 0.95+ with DEXA for fat mass
**Typical BF% difference** | Lower readings | Typically 8–10 percentage points higher than Basic
**Mobile app** | Not available | Supported
**Population** | Validated for adults 18+ | Validated for adults 18+
Advanced generally reports higher body fat percentages than Basic because it uses a three-compartment approach that separates bone mineral content from lean mass, producing a more complete picture of body composition.
Important: Pick One Model and Stick With It
Results from the Basic and Advanced models are not directly comparable. Switching a client between models mid-program will make their trend data inconsistent. Choose one model for your business, set it on every scanner, and keep it consistent for the duration of each client's engagement.
If this resolves your issue, no further action is needed.
If the problem persists, contact support and include: your business account name, the Styku Studio version number (visible in Settings or the About screen), and the names or locations of any sites where the setting appears incorrect.
