How do I interpret the body composition pie graph on the Styku Scan Report?
Overview
The Styku Scan Report includes a pie graph that visually represents a client's body composition. This visual is designed to make it easier to communicate scan results to clients, especially those who benefit from seeing data displayed graphically.
Details
Fat Mass vs. Fat-Free Mass
The pie graph breaks body composition into two components:
- Fat Mass – the portion of the body made up of fat tissue
- Fat-Free Mass – everything else, including muscle, bone, and water
Each component is displayed as a percentage of total body weight.
Body Composition Categories
Using the Phoenix or DEXA body composition algorithm, which is based on Mayo Clinic research, each client is placed into one of the following categories:
Category | Description
**Essential** | Minimum fat required for basic physiological function
**Athletic** | Very low body fat, typical of trained athletes
**Fit** | Healthy, above-average fitness level
**Average** | Typical for the general population
**At Risk** | Elevated body fat associated with health risk
For a full explanation of each category and its thresholds, see: Body Composition Metrics — Body Fat, Lean Mass, Weight, and Sarcopenia.
Percentile Rank
Styku also provides a percentile rank that compares the client's body composition against others of the same sex and similar age.
- This works similarly to percentile rankings used for IQ or standardized test scores.
- A higher percentile rank is the goal — it means the client's body composition is better than a larger proportion of their peer group.
- Use this number to help clients understand where they stand relative to others and to motivate progress over time.
Notes
- The pie graph and percentile rank are most effective when used together during a client review session.
- The algorithm used (Phoenix or DEXA) will affect the exact category thresholds applied. Confirm which algorithm is active in your Styku configuration.
- These visuals are particularly helpful for clients who find raw numbers harder to interpret on their own.
If this resolves your issue, no further action is needed.
If the problem persists, contact support and include: the algorithm currently selected in your Styku software settings and a screenshot of the Scan Report in question.
