Does Styku provide visceral fat ranges or risk rankings for client reporting?

Styku does provide a risk ranking for Visceral Fat Area, and you can find it directly in Styku Studio. However, Styku does not provide specific numerical ranges for visceral or subcutaneous fat the same way it does for body fat percentage — the methodology behind these metrics is different.

What Styku Does Provide for Visceral Fat

Styku's software identifies and reports visceral fat — the fat that surrounds the internal organs — as a key health metric. Visceral fat is metabolically active and is strongly associated with elevated risk for cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and other serious conditions.

Styku Studio includes a Visceral Fat Area metric with a built-in risk ranking (higher or lower risk). You can also tap the info button next to the metric to see the ranges used to determine that ranking.

To find it:

  1. Open Styku Studio on your scanner laptop.
  2. Open a completed scan and go to the Fitness & Weight Loss tab.
  3. Navigate to the Summary page.
  4. Select the Segmental Analysis sub-tab.
  5. Locate Visceral Fat Area — the risk ranking and info button are displayed there.

How Styku Models Body Composition

Styku uses 3D depth sensing to measure body circumferences, which are then used to predict body composition in correlation to DXA data. Styku's body composition algorithm is scientifically validated with a strong correlation with DEXA (0.95+ for fat mass) (within 1–2% of the gold standard Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry scanner).

Because of this approach, visceral and subcutaneous fat figures are not computed the same way as devices that use Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) — such as handheld BIA scales (e.g., Omron) or devices like InBody. BIA results are sensitive to hydration status, carbohydrate consumption, sweating, recent exercise, and alcohol consumption, all of which can skew results. Numbers from those devices should not be compared directly to Styku's output.

Notably, Styku is not reliant on hydration levels, making it less error-prone and more reliable for tracking change over time.

Additional Visceral Fat Context for Client Reporting

When educating clients about health risk, practitioners should use waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, and body fat percentage in combination, as all three are recognized indicators of health risks from obesity-related diseases. Established waist circumference thresholds associated with increased disease risk are:

  • Men: greater than 40 inches
  • Women: greater than 35 inches
