Can I get a discount on licensing fees if I buy a used Styku scanner?
Can I get a discount on licensing fees if I buy a used Styku scanner?
If you are considering buying a used Styku scanner — for example, through a third-party marketplace — you will still need to purchase a new software license and subscription directly from Styku to use it. Licensing discounts for used scanner buyers may be available on a case-by-case basis, but the standard monthly subscription fee cannot be waived. Buying new from Styku may also come with promotional incentives, such as free subscription months, that are not available with used hardware purchases.
What costs apply to a used scanner?
Per Styku's Product-Specific Terms of Service, equipment purchases not made through a Styku sales agent — including used Styku equipment purchased from third-party resellers or private parties — are subject to fees imposed by Styku in order to access the Service and operate the equipment. These fees cover:
- Securing the previous owner's account and data
- Creating new account licensing and permissions for the new owner
- Onboarding, training, and after-sales agent access, and the costs associated with these services
These fees apply whether the hardware is new or secondhand. Styku cannot waive the monthly subscription fee based on your expected scan volume.
Can I get a discount?
Styku may offer a partial discount on the one-time licensing activation fee for customers who purchase used hardware. However:
- The monthly subscription fee is a fixed cost and cannot be reduced
- Any discount offer is made at Styku's discretion and is not guaranteed
- Discounts on used-scanner licensing do not include the promotional free months that are sometimes offered with new scanner purchases
If you buy a new scanner directly from Styku, you may qualify for promotional incentives such as free subscription months, which can reduce your total cost over time.
Buying Through Styku's Consignment Program
If you are still deciding where to source a used scanner, Styku offers refurbished units directly through its Styku Consignment Program. Styku accepts trade-ins from existing customers, assesses and refurbishes each unit, then resells them to new buyers. Purchasing through the program offers some advantages over buying from a private or third-party seller:
- Styku-assessed hardware — each unit is reviewed for condition and function before resale
- Clean account transfer — the previous owner's account and data are cleared as part of the process
- Simplified activation — license setup is handled as part of your purchase, not as a separate step after the fact
To ask about current refurbished unit availability, contact Styku support or sales through the Styku Business Portal at styku.com/portal.
Risks of buying a used scanner
Before purchasing a used Styku scanner from a third-party seller, be aware of the following:
- No hardware warranty. Used scanners sold privately carry no Styku warranty. If the hardware is faulty or damaged, Styku cannot repair or replace it under any warranty program. Note that Priority Hardware Support — including priority repairs, replacement, and extended limited warranty — is a Styku Care benefit available only on Elite and Enterprise plans for scanners purchased through Styku.
- Compatibility issues. Older scanner models may use different hardware components that may not be compatible with current software or accessories.
- License status unknown. A used scanner's previous license may still be active on another machine. Transferring a license to a new computer requires the previous owner to have deactivated it first. If that has not been done, activation may be delayed.
- Missing components. A complete Styku system includes the camera tower, turntable, laptop computer, and accessories. Verify all parts are included before purchasing.
How to activate a used scanner
If you have already purchased a used Styku scanner and are ready to activate it:
- Contact Styku support to confirm the scanner's eligibility for activation and discuss licensing options.
- Pay the applicable fees via invoice provided by Styku. Per Styku's Product-Specific Terms of Service, these fees cover securing the previous owner's account and data, creating new account licensing and permissions, and onboarding, training, and after-sales agent access.
- After payment is confirmed, the Styku support team will provide your license key and guide you through setup.
- Once your account is created in Styku Studio, enter your license key when prompted to complete activation.
After activation
Once your license is active, you will be guided through a six-task onboarding checklist in the Styku Business Portal. The checklist includes:
- Attending a weekly orientation webinar
- Adding additional team members to the portal
- Completing Certification Course 1: Software Features, Scan Analysis, and Reports (13 lessons)
- Completing Certification Course 2: Health Assessments and Body Composition Analysis (12 lessons) — passing this course provides a certification code to unlock the Advanced Body Composition Model on your system
- Setting up your scanner hardware
- Completing your first scan, plus two additional scans to verify scanner precision
All Styku plans also include 24/7 global support and access to the Knowledge Base. Unlimited staff accounts can be added through the Business Portal so your team can access training, resources, and support tools.
If this resolves your issue, no further action is needed.
If the problem persists, contact support and include: the scanner model and business location name or license key (if known), confirmation of whether the previous owner deactivated their license, your payment confirmation for the activation invoice, and a description of any error messages shown during activation.
Applies to: All Styku scanner models purchased through third-party or secondhand channels; Styku Studio V5; all subscription tiers
